Few people will understand the decision I made this morning, when choosing which car to use for a trip into the city.
I had switched cars with my son-in-law, because he needed a bigger car for two days. My choice this morning was between a Porsche and a Smart. I choose the Smart.
I have never been interested in cars, but do like to drive a decent one (my definition). I have owned Porsches, Mercedes, and BMWs and enjoyed each at the time. A Porsche is a fine car, but it requires a certain attitude, age, and unhindered road to enjoy properly. I recall the joy of driving my first one, when I was a pilot, fearless, and foolish…and gas cost 18 cents a liter and car ownership in Europe was limited. Now, I am cautious, gas is ten times that price, and roads are crowded. My favorite car is a Smart, unless I need to travel a long distance on an Autobahn. For long trips, I prefer a large sedan, comfortable sedan with all the extras.
