The following headline caught my attention. The accompanying article, although disturbing, is not surprising. This explains why wingnut politicians, talk radio blowhards, and Fox News idiots find so much traction with voters.
I have no hope that these numbers will improve. On the contrary, dumbing down will continue, as if this were a government policy. If not the entire government, then the Republican bits.
Last night, I experienced a slight (very slight!) revival of my faith in humanity.
I watched a BBC program on advances in astronomy. It was both fascinating and mind-boggling. I was amazed at what humans can and do achieve in far away places and without fanfare, driven only by the urge to know more.
One thought did sneak into the reverie. I could not help but wonder which governments were willing to pay for such gargantuan projects. Politicians must not know about them, because few would vote for their continuation.
My deeper thought was wonder at human ability to not only conceive, but to construct equipment needed to search the universe. One must see the latest telescopes to believe that they exists. Few will understand how they work or how they could be made.
At some point, I realized the contrast in the intelligence required to study astronomy and the pettiness of the current political dialog. Or the gap between the selfless dedication to delve into the mysteries of the universe and the greediness of economic life. Politicians, commentators, and their enablers might be too stupid and self-centered to understand or appreciate space programs. They readily disparage knowledge, science, and learning, but are willing to kowtow to greedy bankers and profit-driven corporations.
Most people do not know, do not care about, and are incapable of understanding the need for or discoveries of science and the exiting aspects of the television program, which I enjoyed. They are interested only in Disneyland, Opryland, Dollyland, and shopping malls. Political news and reality shows (which I have never watched) tempt me to go to bed and cover my head with a pillow.
