This is it! My self-deprecation has a limit…unlike infinity, which may or may not have an end.
And, that is the topic of my despair. I saw a program on infinity and realized how lucky I am to be simple-minded. Can you imagine thinking about that topic all your life? There are scientists and mathematicians that do just that. Of course, each is extremely intelligent and got good grades in math.
I had heard of a googol (what the Google guys wanted to call their website, but could not spell it correctly—they were math guys, not word guys…which would have earned them much less money: just ask any author.) Anyways, a googol is 10 raised to the power of 100 (1 with 100 zeros tagged on). That’s a big number, but not the biggest. There is a googol plex (but I can’t recall the definition), which is a whole bunch larger.
One fun fact about numbers: it would take 30 years to write down 1 to one billion. This is not the kind of thing anyone would want to devote so much time to doing…although people do crazy things. The Big Bang was—allegedly—13.7 billion years ago. Now, that’s a big number, but not the biggest. In fact, it’s a small number, when one is talking about the subject of infinity.
I also learned that the largest number is known as Graham’s Number. It’s so large, that it cannot be written. There is not enough matter in the universe to handle the digits.
I now know that the subject of infinity is an infinite subject. Is the universe infinite, or are there infinite universes. No one knows if it exists, how to define it, or how to prove its existence. Just like with god.
One could get screwed up in the head with such thoughts, which is why I will not think about this again…
