Many years ago, I noticed the paradox and/or absurdity of US politicians ruling the world. They thank their position to votes by the worst-informed voters on the planet. Tests have proven that most cannot even identify geographic points in their own country, much less any point of interest on the globe. Few know any history or are informed about current events. They are gullible enough to believe anything spouted by the turkeys for which they vote. These uninformed then play a role in defining the foreign policy, which has a large impact on the people of many countries.
Sadly, politicians love dumb, uniformed voters....
Surprising news: for the first time ever, congress agreed with President Obama, although having brazenly claimed to oppose every move he makes. Of course, that must only deal with matters having a positive effect on US citizens. As long as the decision will harm foreigners, preferably non-Christians, agreement with a loathed president is possible, perhaps even necessary. This is the only measure that congress has passed in recent history: war/guns/profits. And, reports suggest that Republicans idiots want to send more weapons than the president and his advisors have judged to be needed. None of the screamers who want to send bullets to Syrian seem to recall that the US armed the mujahadin in Afghanistan, which turned into Al Qaeda.
Too clean to play dirty...
I’m not sure if it’s a good sign or a sign of something else, when some of the most impressive politicians are women. I am talking about the likes of Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand, both US Senators. If the country were run by the likes of these people, it would surely be a better place. ( I do not include Hillary on this list, for reasons that I have mentioned earlier.)
And, then there’s Angie…
This is about fish (as the title might suggest)...
I have heard that people travel to Mauritius to snorkel and scuba dive because to the abundant sea life. I spotted one decent size fish (it looks better in profile, but the bloody thing turned!) and one school of minnows during my 9 day stay. In the Maldives, fish were abundant every time I peered into the water and more-abundant each time I stuck my face in the water wearing a diving mask.
That said, I enjoyed the best tuna of my life caught in the water off Mauritius. That says a lot, because I have eaten very expensive tuna in Japan and in top Japanese restaurants. Those folks are supposed to know a thing or two about tuna. I hope that they do not discover Mauritius.
Anyway, I spoke with a local man fishing off the beach of the hotel (all beaches are open to the public in Mauritius). I commented on my lack of sightings and asked about his luck. He had had none that day. He explained that fishing had declined and the reefs been shrinking for years. This man has first-hand knowledge of the effects of climate change that US politicians deny. Guess who’s smarter: the one trying to feed his family or the ones bought off by lobbyist?
Some are making a big deal about something that happened 100 years ago. Anniversaries are a time to remember…something…maybe…or use for political purposes. Politicians are the same everywhere.
Are these people stupid or venal both? Don’t people notice? For example, British politicians try to commemorate the First World War with warm words about remembering. Of course, they speak mostly of the wasted lives, but talk only of “sacrifice” and never about the lesson not learned. At the same time, these same geniuses demand troops be sent to Ukraine, which proves that they do not remember, do not care, and have not learned. From the safety of their clubs in London, as in the past, “great men” send forth poor suckers to use bullets from which they profit.
At least one intelligent man resides in England, but his lone voice does little good to stem the tide of stupidity and hypocrisy.
You be the judge…
If anyone needs additional evidence—after recent Supreme Court rulings—that the US justice system is screwed up, look no further than the award of $23 billion—yes, billion, not million—to an individual who’s husband died, allegedly, from too much smoking.
All are aware that corporations lie, especially tobacco and oil corporations (obviously taking a lesson from the politicians they buy), and that they should be punished for their evil ways, but what is one lady going to do with so much money? Why not force the company to put that money into cancer research, which would be more useful?
Common sense seems to have no place in the United States, a land ruled by money, crooked and/or inept politicians, and stupid courts.
Scandals come and go, but rarely does a politician admit the truth.
Currently, in England, there is a scandal about child abuse by members of Parliament, which slumbers at the heart of the British Establishment. There is talk of a “ring”. This happened many years ago, and must surely still occur. The media is more hung up on the cover-up, which is often more grating than the crime. In this case, both are despicable...and truly English.
Unusually, the former head of the Conservative Party has admitted that documents were kept secret and the guilty protected “for the good of government”. They were afraid of what would happen to public support for government, if the scandal became known. Protecting their own party members was more important than protecting children. Where have we heard this before. Despite centuries of battling against the Catholic Church, these two have a lot in common: men at the top.
So, politicians everywhere are more interested in protecting themselves than doing what is right. Citizens are expected to all obey laws and to act morally; politicians hold themselves to a different standard.
