Well worth reading…an excellent comment in The New Yorker:
The suffering in Iraq of the innocent civilians is nothing to joke about. Too many people of all sects are affected, which must be Allah’s will, (that is what each side claims, as they kill each other). I do not know.
That said, I was amused to note that one of the items drastically needed by the refugees is solar units to re-charge mobile phone batteries. In former times, food, water, and tents, as well as medicine, were the priorities. The simple loss of electricity is no longer considered drastic. Now, everyone wants to check their Twitter account before slacking thirst or caring for the children.
I was surprised to discover the following article in a conservative-leaning British newspaper. I agree with the conclusion, because by saving a few from suffering, western governments have inflicted suffering on everyone.
STEPHEN GLOVER: I'm afraid the bitter truth is Iraq and Libya were better off under the tyrants toppled by an arrogant and naive West
Why did we invade Iraq and Libya asks STEPHEN GLOVER. We have made a bad situation worse for the people we thought that we were liberating.
Wars, especially unwarranted and sleazy ones, always have unintended consequences. Take the unnecessary (except for those profiting) gifting of democracy in Iraq.
I am certain that the geniuses—all of whom surely claim to be good Christians carrying out the work of “their” god—thought up and marketed (even if they did a poor job and the lies became transparent) this folly, did not intend for Iraqi Christians to be persecuted and driven from their homes.
Well, guess what happened. News reports indicate that Christians have been given the choice of forced conversion to Islam, payment of “protection” money, or leaving the country. Very few remain.
Congratulations, neocons and people in power at the time, you have done a great service to your religion. At least, you all made money off the deal and can enjoy a nice life far away from the mess and suffering you caused.
At least Republicans and Democrats are not killing each other....
Unless one believes Scandal is based on true events...
While we're on the subject of delusion...
I have seldom read such an absurd assertion as the one I noticed in today’s London Telegraph:
US 'must strike Iraqi jihadists to save the West'
Save the West? How are Iraqi jihadist threatening life on London or New York’s streets? Do they have intercontinental missiles, nuclear submarines, or long-range bombers? Are these guys gonna drive their Toyota pick-ups to Europe or ship them to the US?
