À la recherche du temps perdu
_ It took some time, but I finally figured out why Hillary is groveling in Burma/Myanmar.
It’s the 1950’s all over again. Back then, the US government jumped into bed with dictators in Vietnam (to mention only one), out of fear of the Soviet Union.
Now, the US government, out of fear of China, is cozying up to new dictators. Once again, clichés about freedom and democracy are being spouted.
First of all, doesn’t anyone read current events? It seems to me that everything sold at Walmart and other US retail outlets is produced in China. China is the largest owner of US debt. Chinese people are able to travel outside their country. China’s economy is booming. Chinese people are becoming millionaires and billionaires, aspiring more to Bill Gates than Chairman Mao. Which of those statements apply to Burma?
Second, doesn’t anyone read history? (Okay, I know there’s own Republican clown, who claims to be an “historian”. He misquotes, twists, and fabricates it...which is not reading or understanding.) People should read the history of US involvement in Vietnam, starting in 1918, with Ho Chi Minh’s first attempt to discuss freedom and democracy for his country. Ignore the bits written by anyone using the words “who lost China?”).
I received an email today with facts about the Vietnam War, listing statistics about the dead. Over one half the 58,000 killed were 18 years old. The only bigger waste of a country’s young manhood that of countries in World War 1.
It will take some time to become involved in another Asian quagmire, but there are enough arrogant, ignorant and stupid people in Washington, and first steps have been taken...
