_ Even with correct spelling, this is not my favorite Christmas carol, but it’s useful as a headline. (The words are stolen from a Christmas card with a drunken Santa as illustration, which I received from a classmate in college.)
My favorite carols are Silver Bells and Oh, Holy Night. The latter is best when sung by a choir of boys. I am more enamored of the music than the lyrics. Great Christmas songs are like great cathedrals: they give witness to human creativity and skills. Religion is the catalyst, unlike its usual role as troublemaker.
I do not enjoy most of the modern Christmas songs, although there are exceptions. Having a bad memory, I can think of no names. The song in Love, Actually is good, because it is in Love, Actually, but it is not a true Christmas carol.
