_ Each election cycle, I am puzzled by blatant attacks on real or imagined use of the French language. What is wrong with friendship with France? It makes much more sense than friendship with England, other than the language. France was an ally in the Revolutionary War, which set the county free from England rule. France also had a revolution and shares values, not found in the United Kingdom.
Of course, it is a well-known fact that American citizens know little history and less geography. Perhaps, anything “foreign” is a nasty label to add to an opponent, because voters will not know reality. Still, I wonder what people have against France...
