I just read a piece in the New York Tiimes by Maureen Dowd which discusses US involvement in Afghanistan. It mentions that the US had been involved in this country for nine (9) years.
There was a kid in my class in private school (this is 1962), whose father was a pilot. He flew for an airline none of us had ever heard of: Air America. (I have since learned that it was a wholly owned subsidiary of the US Government.) I recall him explaining to us that his father was in a place called Afghanistan, again something we kids did not know.
After reading a bit of history, I imagine that the US Government has been involved in Afghanistan since at least 1945. Do the math, Maureen. It's worse than you realize. Some people (governments) never learn; others enjoy beating their heads against the wall, because it's so profitable for so many.
Prior to writing novels, the author enjoyed a multifaceted career: from decorated combat aviator to advertising professional to global communications director of a major consumer brand. He has traveled the world and met sports, film and television stars, political leaders, and royalty. He graduated from Middlebury College, is married, lives in Germany, and has two grown children.
