I read Catch-22 while playing at war in Vietnam. You can imagine the impact it had on someone (already liberal leaning) capable of thinking and keenly observing what was going on around him. It was a different war, but all the characters had come back to life. I ran into them everyday.
There is a tribute to Joseph Heller and a review of a biography at the time of the 50th anniversary of the book that revealed war’s "Emperor’s New Clothes", so to speak.
